Leveraging AI to Improve Traffic Safety and Reduce Accidents in Dallas-Fort Worth Area

In the bustling metropolis of Dallas-Fort Worth, traffic and accidents have long been a source of frustration and danger for residents. However, several cities in the area are now turning to artificial intelligence (AI) to help alleviate these issues.

Arlington is the latest city to adopt a "smart" traffic signal platform at its major intersections. The NoTraffic signaling system is powered by sensors and cameras, allowing signals to sync and adjust to traffic conditions in real-time. The technology is already being used in Dallas, Fort Worth, Garland, and McKinney.

NoTraffic claims that the use of its tech results in "enhanced safety, reduced traffic times, and savings in fuel costs." The system is able to detect and respond to singular traffic events, such as lengthening a yellow light and holding cross traffic if an approaching car is not slowing down or a freight vehicle needs extra time to stop. It can also prioritize emergency vehicle traffic and help improve crossing safety for pedestrians.

Variabilities in traffic patterns, particularly after the COVID-19 pandemic, have made it harder for planners to pin down peak hours and anticipate logjams. Traditional traffic planning methods, such as manually counting cars at intersections, are no longer sufficient in addressing the changing traffic landscape.

Arlington is spending an estimated $1 million over the next two years for NoTraffic. The city plans to retrofit 50 to 80 signalized intersections with the technology by 2026. The new tech works alongside existing systems without installing hardware aside from radar sensors and cameras, meaning old and new signals can be fitted with the same capabilities.

In addition to improving traffic flow and safety, the NoTraffic system can also lead to reduced emissions and better planning for pedestrians and underserved communities.

The use of AI in traffic management is a promising development in the Dallas-Fort Worth area. As the region continues to grow, the implementation of smart traffic systems can help alleviate the stress and danger of traffic and accidents for residents.
